Throughout the process the consent is important. Consent is a two-way process. I will give you information in a way that you understand, that you will be able to retain, and you will be able to weigh up the pros and cons of each of the different options. Once we have decided what we are going to do we will then go through the formal consenting process. This is often a piece of paper where I will write down exactly what you are having done, that we have discussed the options, and I will write down what we have discussed, the pros and cons of each of the procedures, and then I will sign it and you will sign it, but at all times you can change your mind up until the day of surgery. Increasingly we are now being asked to consent patients in a separate consenting clinic, and of course I am more than happy to provide that, but I really do believe that you have got busy lives and you may not want to go through that extra step of coming back to the hospital for a separate consenting process.
