Mike Hayton gives invited keynote lecture at the American Association of Hand Surgery Conference

Mike was delighted to have been invited to give a keynote invited lecture at this years annual meeting of the American Association of Hand Surgery Conference. His lecture title was " When can I play Doc ?" and discussed the ethical issues that many health care professionals face when dealing with professional sports injuries. The experience that Mike has developed over the last decade dealing with many professional athletes enabled him to speak with authority on this subject. His talk covered a variety of issues including voluntary and involuntary actions, paternalism, both hard and soft and also external coercion. He then gave the results of his surgeries dealing with professional athletes including his research into skier's thumb, scapho-lunate ligament injuries and the injuries that occur in the boxers hand. He concluded with a few specific anonymised case studies that showed how Mike combined his ethical reasoning and clinical skills allowing the athlete to compete at the appropriate time.
