Percutaneous scaphoid fixation
The scaphoid is a bone in the wrist. It is one of the commonest bones in the wrist to be broken. If it fails to heal there is a good chance the wrist will become arthritic in the coming years. Scaphoid fractures can be treated in a plaster of paris cast or increasingly more common fixed with a small screw during an operation. Some fractures need to be fixed if the fracture is in a bad position or the fragments have displaced. Traditional operations involve 5-10cm scars but modern techniques allow some simple fractures to be fixed using a 3mm incision under xray control.
